Shoulder Pain Q&A

Akash Bajaj, MD, MPH

What is the most common cause of shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain can stem from a variety of injuries and conditions. Fortunately, Dr. Bajaj has significant experience in diagnosing the root cause of shoulder pain. For some patients, pain is the result of a traumatic injury to the shoulder joint caused by an event such as a car accident or a sporting injury. For others, however, shoulder pain can be the result of injury and damage to nearby muscles, joints or connective tissue. It should also be noted that health issues such as heart disease or disease of the gallbladder can cause shoulder pain. This is why it is so important to get an accurate diagnosis at the onset of any type of shoulder discomfort.

When is it time to seek medical treatment?

Patients are urged to pay close attention to the messages that their body is sending, especially when it comes to pain. In general, if shoulder pain does not subside within a couple of days or if your range of motion is severely restricted, you should seek professional care. When an injury results in a shoulder joint that is visibly misshapen, significantly swollen or intensely painful, it is time to seek treatment at the emergency room or an urgent care center. The inability to mobilize the joint or extend the affected arm away from the side of the body is also cause for concern and should prompt immediate action. In addition, when pain is not severe but is always present at a lesser level, patients should seek proper diagnostic, restorative and pain management care.

What types of pain management options are available for shoulder pain?

Depending on the root cause of the pain, Dr. Bajaj may use a variety of treatments to address shoulder pain including joint injections, trigger point injections, or other innovative treatments including platelet-rich plasma injections. This approach begins by drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, which is then placed into a centrifugation machine that spins the blood at such a high speed that the components begin to separate. The red and white blood cells are removed, leaving the platelet-rich plasma behind. That solution is then injected back into the body, providing the healing powers of platelets to the exact region where healing is taking place. An accelerated healing process means less pain and a swifter recovery.
