Ankle & Foot Pain Q&A

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of foot and heel pain. The condition is the result of damage to the thick band of fibrous tissue that connects the heel to the ball of the foot. When that tissue is compromised by excessive athletic strain, improper footwear or chronic obesity, high levels of pain can result. Discomfort and pain are most pronounced in the morning or after long periods of being off of one’s feet and tends to subside during the course of normal daily activities, only to flare up again once the area has been rested.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

When plantar fasciitis leads to foot fatigue, the structure of the muscles of the foot can become altered. Trigger points, which are small muscle bundles that experience involuntary contractions, can develop. The anatomy of the human foot is incredibly complex, providing plenty of places for these trigger points to occur. Some patients are able to find a measure of relief by various stretching techniques, but it is not uncommon for self-care approaches to fail in delivering lasting results. Trigger point injections can help to relieve the pain associated with plantar fasciitis by delivering medication directly to the affected muscle knot.

What are some of the common causes of ankle pain?

Ankle pain can have a number of causes. Often, irritation of the Achilles' tendon is the culprit. In some cases, various types of arthritis are to blame. Patients are sometimes suffering from bursitis, which is an inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs that provide a cushioning effect in the joints. Gout is another condition that can be expressed by pain in the ankle area. The first step in finding relief from persistent ankle pain is scheduling a consultation to determine the cause of the condition. From that point forward, various treatment options can be explored.
