Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant. It contains a chemical called curcumin. Curcumin in addition to other chemicals in turmeric might decrease swelling and inflammation in the body.  For this reason, turmeric may be beneficial in the treatment of conditions which leading to an inflammatory process. Some studies show that turmeric may also help fight infections, reduce the occurrence of certain types of cancers, and help manage the symptoms of some digestive problems. In a small study conducted in 2012, curcumin powder actually proved to be more superior at reducing joint pain and swelling than diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Turmeric has been used for 4,000 years to treat a variety of conditions. Traditionally used in Chinese and Indian medicine to treat arthritis. Surprisingly enough, one of the enzymes that turmeric is effective at blocking is cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This is the same target in which the medication celecoxib (Celebrex) was formulated to inhibit.

Turmeric is commonly being used for the treatment of arthritis, acid reflux, joint pain, stomach pain, inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, menstrual problems, diarrhea, intestinal gas, stomach bloating, loss of appetite, liver problems, stomach ulcers, gallbladder disorders, high cholesterol, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and fatigue.

The usual recommended dose of curcumin powder is between 400 & 600mg taken up to three times daily. Even though tumeric is a natural OTC product, one thing to always be mindful of is the possibility of drug interaction. Speak to your doctor and/or pharmacist before starting any new medication.
