The elbow joint is made up of cartilage, bone, ligaments, and fluid, and its movement is made easier with muscles and tendons. As the elbow is an important moving part of our body, any injury or damage in its parts can lead to great pain, which would significantly affect your day to day activities.
Elbow pain generally occurs to athletes due to typical wear and tear; but it is also common in arthritis patients, and in those who have to do heavy physical work[or]with repetitive hand movement. If not given proper attention, regular elbow pain can result into more serious issues. Below are some common injuries to the elbow that require attention.
The Ulna Collateral Ligament (UCL) is located at the middle of the elbow. Common symptoms of a UCL injury are swelling, difficulty in movement, bruising, or pain while clenching the fist. Treatment of the injury can be done by physical therapy, but it would require surgery if the UCL injury becomes too severe. Recovery time varies from few days to years.
Bursitis is common in adults above 40 years of age, and usually happens due to the inflammation of the lubricating fluid sac around the elbow joint, which is caused because of an injury or wear and tear of the tendons. Taking anti-inflammatory medicines, rest, and applying a bag of ice above the injured area can help to control the pain. If the pain does not subside, then anti- inflammatory injections are recommended to reduce the pain.
Tennis Elbow happens due to the overuse of the forearm muscles. Here, the pain in the elbow starts gradually, and then increases to restrict the motion of the arm. It can be treated by rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). It is advised to visit a pain relief center and learn the steps to reduce pain caused due to tennis elbow, as ignoring it for long periods of time can lead to many other severe conditions.
Muscle strains are a pulled muscle condition, where the muscles in the elbow are overstretched or torn. Strain mainly happens due to repetitive movement of the arms, sudden heavy lifting, and sports injuries. Common symptoms are weakness, swelling, and throbbing pain when the arm is at rest. Muscle strain can also be treated by RICE; but in severe cases, surgery might be needed in order to reattach torn muscles.
